    Could be great ... but some simple and fundamental flaws left me diasppointed

    After much research I bought this pack mainly because it seemed to be a hybrid of a running vest and hiking pack — perfect for short, quick hikes where you don't want to have to stop to access hydration or essentials. When I went to use it, I immediately discovered that my standard 500ml soft flasks did not fit securely in the shoulder strap pockets without using the elastic strap above. Which was fine for one side which had an elastic strap, but on the other side, instead of elastic there is just a strip of fabric with the Montane logo on it, which serves no practical purpose whatsoever, and thus the soft flask continually fell out.

    The second thing I noticed was the zip positioning on the top mesh pocket. Being on the far side makes no sense, because when you are wearing the pack it is really hard to access this pocket without taking the pack off.

    The third thing was the absence of a safety whistle. I've never seen a hiking pack with out one!

    And finally, the lack of an integrated rain cover was another simple but annoying flaw.

    In the end I took the pack to a tailor to have an extra elastic fitted, and spent more money on a rain cover and a safety whistle. But for the price I would have hoped this pack would have been more usable from the get-go; I've never had to alter a pack before in order to make it functional.

    Now that I've tried to address the problems myself, hopefully future adventures with this pack will be less frustrating than my first outing with it.

    Very comfy pack

    Bought to use whilst running, it's the perfect size. Lots of extra little pockets. Top pocket is mesh rather than solid fabric, but nothing a dry bag can't sort!

    Amazing backpack

    I bought this backpack for my Everest base camp trip and it did not disappoint! The backpack is very practical with plenty of little pockets. Love the colour as well! The only negative thing I would say is that it does not come with a rain cover unfortunately.
