    Hardly notice I'm wearing a bag

    Light af, snug, excited to use this for long commutes to work. Lots of pockets in all the right places. Mostly I like how little swing there is when moving (none) and how cosy the straps are. No worries about rubbing sores.

    The roll top fastening is a bit unfamiliar and confusing- there are no how-tos out there - seemingly not a clip to close the roll top but some bungee strings one on either side. I'm going to ask customer service to show how to use it as I'm not getting it right now

    Gecko VP20

    I use Montane bags for the good mix of accessible storage, clever design and lightness. I’ve previously used the 20 litre Via Dragon for longer mountain runs requiring more kit, or overnighters. Overall that was a great bag, but ultimately sacrificed too much strength to be lighter. I think for a 20 litre pack, the necessarily heavier load required a bit more robustness. The shoulder straps on mine disintegrated, and it had needed patching relatively early on.

    The new Gecko seems to address this, although I haven’t subjected it to a proper mountain test yet. I’m glad this reverts to the roll top and more substantial waist belt to spread the weight. The straps seem more substantial (this will be the key test) and pole attachments are better. A deeper side pocket (as in the Via) would be helpful as a bottle tends to flop out and I prefer these to bladders, which are a faff to refill and requires taking the pack off. But the compression string can be used to keep a bottle in the side pocket.

    As with other Montane bags, the fit is like a glove, although it sits higher, like the VP12 (unlike the old Jaws 10 and Dragon 20, which I prefer but it’s not major). Overall the VP20 seems like a distinct improvement, eg the new zips and chest attachments. Light, plenty of storage and easy to access while running.

    There best Gecko yet?

    This pack is the comfiest, securest, and most practical way to carry large amounts of kit for long- or multi-day adventures, or for events with OTT kit lists (here's looking at you, Fellsman). The multiple large pockets probably mean you can get to everything you need without taking the pack off, but if you do need to it holds loads and the main compartment is easily accessible due to the roll-top. The compression is great for when not full, and the new front closures are miles better than the old clip versions (that always used to fall off).

    It's so good I'll probably use it, well cinched down, for events where I'd previously have used my 12l. It's not noticeably heavier, and the straps and pockets are far better.
